Chapter Four

* * *

“Time for singing!” Kaye scampered across the living room to the piano, set Luciana carefully on top, and climbed up on the bench. “Daddy, come play.”

Every year after dessert Noah played Christmas songs on the piano while Bert and Kaye sang. This year Kaye had been taking piano lessons and was going to play a few songs with him.

Trying to get back in a holiday mood, Noah pulled himself from the couch and joined Kaye at the piano. He tickled her waist and she squirmed and giggled. Instantly his chest felt a little lighter.

“What should we play first?”

Kaye’s face screwed up in concentration. Then she turned, her ponytail flying up and hitting him in the chest. “Ellie, what should we play first?”

Ellie’s smile seemed forced as she got up from the hearth and came toward them. In spite of himself, he wanted to know what had caused her reaction at dinner. He’d seen the tears in her eyes before she ran off to the bathroom, and knew they weren’t just from coughing.

“What’s your very favorite Christmas song to sing?” Kaye asked.

Ellie’s smile deepened, genuine now as it reached her eyes. His chest lightened another notch as desire shot through his stomach.

His dad was right. He was an idiot. They both were. They needed to stop dancing around the issue and just be honest about how they felt. If he wanted to have a real relationship with her, he had to show her she had options other than Tim. Prove that he was better for her than Tim.

His heart skipped a beat, then another as he resolved to tell her as soon as they could be alone.

“How about ‘Walking in a Winter Wonderland’?” Ellie directed her smile only at Kaye, refusing to meet his eyes. It hurt. But he would fix things.

Kaye clapped her hands. “I love that song!” She nudged Noah’s arm. “Play, Daddy.” She twisted around again. “C’mon, Grandpa. You have to sing too.”

Bert lumbered out of his chair and joined them at the piano. He stood next to Ellie and put his arm over her shoulder. She smiled up at him, and warmth spread from Noah’s chest out to the rest of his body.

In that instant he knew. They could be a family. She could be part of this. She already was part of it. Aside from her grandmother, she’d never had a family she truly belonged to. He would show her that she belonged with them, that they wanted her as part of their family.

Looking up at the way Bert leaned into her, remembering Kaye saying “I love you” to her, he knew his father and daughter already wanted her. Maybe he and Ellie wouldn’t get to a point where both of them wanted to make her an official part of the family. It was way too soon to even be thinking about considering marriage. But maybe someday.

Even if that never happened, she was part of their family now. No matter what happened between the two of them, she would never lose her place in their home.
